March 6 --- 12 weeks from set out date
Don't start anything too early unless you have a consistent source of light and heat.
Instead, prepare containers and saucers by washing with 1 part bleach to 9 parts water – that includes a water pitcher.Buy supplies such as soilless mixes: look for seeds at local markets to get the best varieties. (Check out Highland General Store in Highland Lakes and Katterman Farms in Sussex for seed collections and supplies.)
Week of March 20 --- 10 weeks out
Fluorescent lights up to par? Heating source set? Time to clear the area you’ve set aside for growing plants.April 3 --- 8 weeks ahead of set out date: have enough labels marked for each row or tray - safe to start peppers – remember to thoroughly moisten soil before you plant seeds, then water thoroughly below or lightly from above and cover.
April 17 --- 6 weeks till May 31 – start tomatoes, lettuce, many flowering annuals such as morning glories and snapdragons
Time to thin the seedlings? Wait after the first set of leaves: Okay to transplant when they show two true leaves.
May 1 --- 4 weeks ahead of set out date – start many flowering annuals, sunflowers, zinnias
"Hardening off" - take plants out for a few hours each day, keep them in sun, bring them back in. No extremes of temperature please, no stress.
Our weather is even different than the weather down in the valley, so though we can start our seeds all over town at the same time, note that conditions at your house may be much colder or open to wind than down in the valley.
